A Pair of Gold and Ruby Inset Minangkabau Armbands (Gelang Gadang)
A fine and rare pair of Minangkabau gold and ruby inset armbands (gelang gadang) from the region of Batu Sangkar, West Sumatra, Indonesia.
Description
The Minangkabau are a powerful and wealthy ethnic minority spread throughout Southeast Asia.
These armbands would originally have been part of the wedding regalia for a wealthy bride, then passed down from mother to daughter, as property in Minagkabau culture is passed down matrilineally.
These particular armbands were created in the late 19th or very early 20th century, following a traditional design, and featuring motifs rife with meaning.
