Description

A rare late Ava Period Burmese Buddha.
Carved from a single piece of teak, lacquered, then gilt, this image portrays
Shakyamuni, the historical Buddha, seated upon a three tiered plinth covered in stylized lotus buds in a state of mediation, hands in dhyana mudra. His face is sweet and life-like, with a broad, flat nose, downcast eyes, and a slight smile on his lips. A large, stylized flame rises from the top of the ushnisha, a symbol of the Buddha’s enlightenment.
